The NLRB has issued a charge against the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians (NABET-CWA) Local 51 for denying an employee of his Beck rights and instead demanding approximately $10,000 in union fees. Beck mandates that “private sector workers who choose to refrain from formal union membership can only be forced to pay the portion of dues directly germane to the union’s bargaining functions.” The union refused the employee’s request to adjust the dues accordingly and threatened that he would not be “eligible for future employment” if he didn’t pay up.
