Walmart will donate $5M to the NYC Summer Employment Youth Program, creating 3400 jobs for disadvantaged youth this summer, and the United Food and Commercial Workers has nothing goo to say about it. The union carped in a press release that unionized grocers have been providing summer jobs to the city’s youth for years and called the donation “penance” for Walmart’s sins. The donation dwarfs the $3M in corporate donations raised by Mayor Bloomberg over the past month. Walmart had already donated more than $4M last year to local charities.
