And finally, a partial explanation for the mystery that is Danny Glover.
In case you missed it, Danny Glover, former actor best know for his appearances in the Lethal Weapon film series, has been turning up a lot over the past few years at protests and labor disputes. Here’s Glover making a pitch to Oscars attendees not to wear Hugo Boss suits for its plot to shut down a Workers United-SEIU plant in Cleveland. And here’s Glover at a rally for striking Pocono Hospital workers unionized by SEIU. And here’s “undercover Glover” this time announcing an international investigation of Sodexo based on charges of human rights violations leveled against the food service giant by SEIU. And here’s Glover turning out for Workers United-SEIU in its raid on Philadelphia UNITEHERE

“There was absolutely no misappropriation of one penny of union funds,” Mr. Raynor said in an interview. “This is the flimsiest of charges. What is going on here is an ugly, naked exercise in political retaliation.”
Wow. Tell us how you really feel, Bruce. According to the NYT, SEIU filed charges Monday against its executive vice president, former UNITE HERE potentate and Stern BFF Bruce Raynor in a move to consolidate power around new SEIU president Mary Kay Henry. Officially, Raynor is charged with expensing $2300 in meals last year that weren’t about union business. Officially, Raynor claims those were union business meetings with Alex Dagg, a longtime female friend from UNITE now working for SEIU, but he wanted to “protect her from retaliation” so didn’t

In a surprise move, the Michigan Department of Social Services announced Tuesday it would no longer be withholding “union dues” from the checks of 16,500 home child care providers. In 2006, these providers were forced into “Child Care Providers Together Michigan”, a joint venture between the UAW and AFSCME. Since that time, the CCPTM has done next to nothing for their new “members” except to collect over $3.7 million in dues from them.
A lawsuit filed on behalf of three providers by Mackinac Center for Public Policy has drawn intense scrutiny to the scam over the past year. Last fall the Department of Social Services admitted the providers were in fact not state employees, (they are hired and fired by the parents of the children they care for) thus validating the Center’s contention that the state had made the unprecedented move of requiring union membership from independent businesspersons.

EFCA Update
November stands to be a memorable moment for Big Labor. Most will think we are referring to the election, which could very well unseat enough Democrats that Big Labor’s Washington feeding frenzy will come to an abrupt halt. However, there is a perfect storm brewing that is more than just public reaction to health care reform and disastrous economic policies, beyond the Tea Party movement, beyond the disgust with the “embedding” of former union

For years, Andy Stern, former president of the SEIU, supposedly fought for the little guy against the evils of the corporatists. Stern, often described as “unapologetic about targeting private equity firms” or “shaming business leaders,” now apparently wants to sit on the other side of the table, working on behalf of what one writer calls “organized labor’s historic enemy,” – wait for it – “private equity.”
It was recently announced that Stern had been appointed to the board of SIGA Technologies, and awarded 25,000 stock options. Ron Pearlman and his private-equity firm MacAndrews & Forbes, are the largest shareholders in SIGA Technologies.
It also doesn’t seem to matter to Stern (or to the Obama administration, for that matter), that his new gig creates a conflict of interest with his position on the Obama’s deficit

Labor Relations Insight by Phillip Wilson Will The SEIU Survive?
Sometime tomorrow the results of one of the most important union elections in history will be announced in California. The survival of the SEIU in California (and perhaps everywhere) hangs in the balance. The election will decide whether 43,500 Kaiser Permanente workers will remain SEIU members or will switch to the renegade NUHW that split from the SEIU last year.
No matter what the results, the case is likely

The FBI and DOL investigators have suddenly taken an interest in the activities of Andy Stern, the former president of the SEIU. Two issues are being scrutinized: first, a book publishing deal that saw the union bite the bullet for thousands of copies, and second, Stern’s role in the approval of the salary of Alejandro Stephens, a corrupt SEIU leader in California who apparently performed no work.
The SEIU and its locals bought thousands of Sterns book after it was released by Simon and Schuster, and paid thousands to fact-check and promote the book, although Stern pocketed the full $175,000 advance.
Stephens is on his way to jail for stealing $52,000 from a voter outreach program, while narrowly escaping additional embezzlement charges. Prior to his conviction, the disgraced labor leader

SIGA Technologies, Inc., “a company specializing in the development of pharmaceutical agents to combat bio-warfare pathogens,” announced that former SEIU President Andy Stern was joining its Board of Directors. The company’s reason for this move is because, “Stern has great understanding on how the Federal Government works.” Stern’s track record is not the best when it comes to running operations, including putting the SEIU into huge debt. Stern spent over $100 million of SEIU dues by invading other unions, and “declaring war” against its own members. Employees at SIGA must be just “Giddy!” over this choice.

Speculation continues to spiral in just about every direction about the likelihood that “EFCA” will come to pass, either as legislation or as regulatory changes via the National Labor Relations Board. On the legislative side, Senator McCaskill (D – MO) summed up the legislative school of thought: “I don’t think that card-check is going to come up,” referencing the current session of Congress. However, as we have mentioned before, various elements of
