I wanted to drop you a line to let you know about the terrific job LRI and your consultant did for our employees. He was extremely knowledgeable, easy to work with and has great interpersonal skills that allow him to genuinely connect with employees at all levels. Our facilities mechanics and custodians were so appreciative of his work and the information he shared that he received many hugs, handshakes and thank yous on the last day. Our employees ultimately voted to overwhelmingly defeat the Teamsters 43-no to 3-yes that allows us to continue to work directly with our employees in their best interest giving the us the opportunity to make things right. I am delighted to inform you that I was successful in our decertification against AFSCME Council 5, St. Paul, MN. This was a grass roots effort by three employees of Anoka County who felt we did not need union representation. I believe we were successful because of the valuable esource of LRI. I would suggest making this information louder and more often. If enough of this info had been disemminated sooner, we may not be facing this situation today. Keep up the good work.

NY Longshoremen Still Defiant About Diversity

According to the New York Times, rooting out discrimination in union hall hiring in New York Harbor is nearly as hard as rooting out corruption. The longshoremen’s union has again defied government order last week, refusing to send a representative to a mandatory hearing and making the stunning announcement that the Waterfront Commission had no authority to demand that all hiring be done without discrimination. Put another way, the ILA is exerting the right to continue to discriminate at its own discretion.

The commission has been pushing for years for a more diverse workforce on the docks; union hiring halls are sending in a workforce that is 80% white and male and not at all reflective of the neighborhoods surrounding the
