Why have an employee-centered website?

- First, people are often too busy during the heat of the day to pay close attention to all the things happening in the organization. A website where they can go and learn about what is going on at the company – especially the feel-good stories about the organization that often don’t get discussed around the water cooler – can be a valuable way to build your relationship with employees.
- Second, it allows you to put a “stake in the ground” as far as your company’s internal brand is concerned. Your employees are on the web in social networking spaces whether you know it or not. They are talking about you on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn and other social networking sites. If you do not have a place in that conversation you have no way to contribute to that conversation. While creating a positive, employee centric website will not prevent employees from complaining online, it does help provide balance to that conversation. If you create a compelling web space (including video, regular updates, interactive content, etc.) you can even displace much of that negative conversation.
