The NY Times wrote today about infighting in the NYC Lifeguard Union. This would have made an intriguing Baywatch episode. But I think the most revealing part of the story is the picture of Peter Stein – the head of the union – who must have been separated at birth from former NLRB Chair Robert Battista.
On a more serious note, the article highlights a common union corruption problem – multiple salaries for union officials and entrenched, unaccountable leadership. Stein collected 3 salaries and made more money than the Chief of Police. He hasn’t had a real opponent in decades and his most vocal rival won’t even run against him for office. Nice work if you can get it.
