The Hopkinsville Kentucky Story

by | Oct 14, 2004 | News

This was an interesting group. Hopkinsville is a community that has its economic act together – the Economic Development Council of this small (population 30,000) community is responsible for remarkable industrial development over the past 35 years (50 industries). Perhaps more remarkable, not one of these companies is unionized, and there are only three unionized companies in the county. The EDC has formed a partnership with local industry and government, insisting that new companies who come to Hopkinsville share its commitment to remaining union free – in fact companies that do not share that commitment are asked to locate elsewhere. I don’t advocate a union-free “litmus test” for locating a plant, but it is hard to argue with Hopkinsville’s success.
