Petition for EFCA

Unionistas are wasting no time now that they’ve won the white house for a second term. They have created a petition calling on the President to bypass the constitutional process and enact EFCA by Executive Order. They are also demanding that Obama outlaw Right To Work laws (ironically, in the name of protecting individual rights), and enforce the stagnated Section 7 rights posting law. Here’s the wording of the petition:

Two Democrat Senate Hopefuls Bail On EFCA!

Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado and Governor Joe Manchin who is running for the open West Virgina seat recently announced they do not support the anti-jobs Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA). After a year of Senator Bennet expressing his opinion that EFCA would make it easier for unions to organize, he now says he “would not support the language in that bill.” When Manchin was asked about his view on EFCA he responded by stating : “We must retain the secrecy of the ballot. It’s your vote, and only you should have knowledge of how you do that,” and “Government has no right to be involved in contractual disputes between an organizing body and the company they are working with.”

End Right To Work?!

It appears that the Lame Duck Session is starting early this year! Congressman Brad Sherman (D – California) has introduced a bill to eliminate right-to-work laws in the 22 states that have them.

While claiming that right-to-work laws are “unfair” to unions, Sherman revealed the real reason for the move, “These laws are harmful to states like California… because now we have to compete…” Yep – California does NOT have a right-to-work law to protect workers who don’t want union representation. Thus California’s more heavily unionized businesses are struggling to stay competitive.

Of course, Sherman has acquired the plaudits of the Big Labor community. “With the introduction of legislation banning so-called right-to-work, Congressman Sherman has once again demonstrated his strong commitment to working families,” said Richard Trumka, president of the AFL-CIO.

EFCA’s Stealthy Passage

The National Review recently ran another article about the “stealth adoption” of EFCA. Union Leaders thought they had everything they could ever dream of when Democrats took control of the House, Senate and White House in 2008. With spending millions of dollars to help elect these politicians, union bosses thought it would be a small price to spend to gain everything they ever wanted on their agenda, but this hasn’t happened…..yet. EFCA Update

The Employee Free Choice Act appears to be the bill that will not die. As we move closer to the November elections, and the prospect of lame duck shenanigans, all of the players continue to posture on their side of the issue. The President reiterated his support for the bill, reassuring the AFL-CIO that he would “keep on fighting” to pass it (watch the video here). Speaker of the House Pelosi did the same at a CWA meeting.

If a lame duck ploy fails, another strategy is surfacing that could have a major impact on the EFCA and other unpopular legislation. Is EFCA Actually A Zombie?

The Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) is like one of those zombies you just can’t kill. The Wall Street Journal blog repeats Tom Harkin’s threat to pass EFCA during a lame duck session after the November elections. The article predict that if a large number of Democrat Senators and Representatives are relieved of duty this November that we may see the passage of EFCA, cap and trade and other so-called “progressive” legislation passed during the lame duck session. Recently Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin, chair of the Senate committee overseeing labor issues, told the Bill Press radio show in June that “to those who think [card check] is dead, I say think again.” Top Union Leaders will be looking for payback for their political contributions over the past several elections. Will EFCA Make A Move During "Lame Duck Session?"

Senator Tom Harkin suggested Thursday that the Senate may try to move the Employee Free Choice Act during the lame-duck session, which is (EFCA) later this year after the November elections, but before the new Senators are sworn in. “To those who think it’s dead, I say think again,” Harkin said on the liberal Bill Press radio show. Who knows if this statement is valid, or if Harkin is just trying to make the Union Bosses happy!

Have Unions Lost Their Political Mojo?

Mini Super Tuesday is now in the books, and unions have got to be feeling a little hung over after the $10 million dollar bender they just finished in Arkansas. So far the strategy to rescue their friends (aka Arlen Specter) and punish their foes (aka Blanche Lincoln) has notched a big goose egg on the scoreboard for 2010.

The Specter debacle wasn’t really that bad. To be honest, unions (and POTUS Obama) only half-heartedly came to Specter’s aid in that primary. I think everyone just decided the Democrat turned Republican turned Democrat just wasn’t worth saving, and that he’d be replaced by a “labor guy” anyway. No big loss.

US Representative Says EFCA “Deader than a Doornail”

U.S. Representative Phil Roe recently said in an interview that the card check legislation known as the Employee Free Choice Act is “dead as a doornail.” Although the AFL-CIO is trying to push the bill through before November, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi commented: “Unless the Senate acted on it, she would not bring it to the House floor.” We will have to see if the AFL-CIO has anymore tricks up their sleeves for a final push on their much desired legislation, before the November elections.
